After enjoying the first Gears of War Comic, I was eager to check out the second! The story really has some great spark to it and the graphics, which may appear sloppy, fit right into the contest and make for an incredible feel.

Liam Sharp’s illustrations work quite well with how the story plays out, it may not have the extreme graphics of the video game, however he managers to capture the size and realism of modern day COGs such as Marcus and Dom; battling through the treacherous wasteland of the never ending battlefield.

Joshua Ortega who in my opinion added something more to the Gears of War 2 dialogue by cutting out cheesy and over the top remarks, did a great job on this comic; which is basically the prequel to the second game.

One thing I loved was how Ortega manages to capture the heartbreak as well as violence from battle. We look on as our hero’s move from one slim chance of survival point to the other; we are wrenched to the story.

However, there are those of us who just want to see a line of repulsive lizard men cut in half; luckily for you – this comic has plenty of that!

I’d recommend you pick up issue #2 and #1 if you haven’t done so already!

Officially announced to be available for pre-order on the 4th of August was the Jace Stratton SDCC action figure from NECA. Jace appears in many of the comic books as Gears fans will know, however he has been given a special release for Gears Of War 3 in honour of his inclusion into the upcoming, final video game. The youngest Delta Squad member, who he was raised by after the the Locust slaughtered his parents.

To the dismay of some fans, NECA have decided to go with the Marcus mould for his body, similar to what we saw with the Hoffman figure. Jace does however come with as you would expect, an entirely new facial sculpt – which I’ll admit is very impressive!

The packaging is also a nice addition to this figure, along with the original clamshell packaging, Jace receives a very nice translucent bloody red Crimson Omen backdrop, reminiscent of when you’re about to do in the game. Jace comes packed with the standard COG Lancer Rifle and a Gnasher Shotgun.

As mentioned, Jace has been heavily based on the Marcus mould, which makes sense as he IS a limited addition and entirely new moulds cost money. Nonetheless, he looks very bad ass and is a worthy addition to any Gears of War collection.

1x Colonel Hoffman figure
1x Rookie ODST figure; (canabalized for random parts) the likes of which look like shotgun shells).
(Small bits of string (bracelet variety) used for torso coverings.
Paper packaging material used for “stranded patches” where cloth-like looking material covers sections of Armour (Think Dizzy or Tai).
1x Star Wars Republic Commando Ammunition pouch (canabalized for parts also).

This is a rather simple custom which took me about two hours to think up and finish (mostly due to paint applications). I had first come about doing this custom because I wanted something different from Marcus to lead my COG soldiers, this figure was heavily inspired by Michael Barrick and turned out the way I wanted him.

Patchy, cloth-looking materials were applied to the figure using simple super glue and a lot of patience. I used Apple Barrel paints for applying different colours to the custom. I used various sizes of small brushes to accomplish my paint job, and sometimes used needles for the smallest of details on the armour.

Dizzy is my latest effort, you will need one Dom Santiago figure (chest and head) and one Augustus Cole (legs and arms). Again I looked extensively at reference images to make the best I could. I also for the first time with this custom started carving the figures.

To separate the figure I soaked them in hot water and pulled them into all the small parts.

I then used Cole’s legs, and had to cut a portion of the waist as he was too tall. I put Cole’s arms on Dom’s body.

I then used a rotary tool to remove the torch light from Doms, shoulder, cut the toes hole in the boots and shape the lower portion of the chest armour. I also removed the pouch at the back of the chest, knife and holster.

I then used Milliput to build details including the straps on the legs and arms and fill in the holes in the chest armour, I moved the knife to the other leg and cut Cole’s arm so that the figure could hold the weapon. I then sculpted the elbow joint, arm straps and torn clothing.

For the shot gun shells on the chest I used old Dragon model shells and made the bandolier. I made the beard and hat from Milliput. (I tried my glove method that I used for the Theron Guard helmet but it didn’t work so the hat is permanently attached.

Finally I sculpted the leg holster and painted the figure.

Tai was one of my more ambitions custom jobs. To start you only need a spare Marcus Fenix figure. I looked extensively a images of Kaliso and he is very similar to Fenix with alterations.

I removed and altered the following pieces from the standard Marcus: the strap on the back of his do-rag, cut the magazines and pouch around the waist in half, I also trimmed the piece of armour which is in front of the crouch and removed the shoulder pads.

I then added initial alterations to the figure: round knee pads, tape on right leg, beard, Mohawk and face all using Milliput free hand sculpting. I also free sculpted detail on the back of the chest armour and leg pouches.

I then placed Milliput over the arms and sculpted musculature.

I then painted the figure using the method described earlier.

I created two shoulder pads, the large shoulder armour and harness using the mould method I described in my drone armour guide. For the straps on the harness I used packing tape which I pressed into the Milliput to give the diamond pattern.

I used a black felt ink pen to draw the tattoos onto the arm and face. I then used a flesh coloured wash over the top to give it a more natural skin colour.
